How real a cancer threat is wireless radiation emitted by our cellular phones, wireless devices, laptops and antennas? Unfortunately, given the primordial role they now play in our lives and especially because of the greater susceptibility of children, it appears to be significant. And US states are taking action.
In November, an official commission in New Hampshire created to “Study the Environmental and Health Effects of Evolving 5G Technology” published a watershed majority report citing 10 recognized experts in physics, epidemiology, toxicology, and public policy. It stated:
“All but the presenter representing the Telecommunications Industry acknowledged the large body of peer-reviewed research that shows that the type of RF-radiation generated by wireless devices can have a deleterious effect on humans, especially children, as well as animals, insects, and vegetation.”
One of the Commission’s 15 recommendations to reduce our exposure specifically targeted glioblastomas (brain tumors) and non-cancerous acoustic neuroma tumors (Schwannomas) in calling for the installation of proximity sensors disabling devices when held too close to the head or body.
While in their dissenting report the minority claimed to represent the scientific consensus, citing the Federal Communications Commission, the Food and Drugs Administration, and the American Cancer Society, national and international concern in the scientific community about the health risks of electromagnetic fields has risen dramatically in recent years.
In 2015 the International EMF Scientist Appeal was launched to the United Nations and the World Health Organisation by 190 scientists (who had all published papers in peer-reviewed journals on the biological or health effects of EMF). They called for more protective exposure guidelines for non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMF) in the face of increasing exposure.
Among its signatories, who now number 248 from 42 nations, was Dr. Fiorella Belpoggi, scientific director of Italy’s world-famous Ramazzini Institute. In 2018 Ramazzini published a carcinogenicity bioassay performed on rats exposed from prenatal life until natural death to a mobile phone radio frequency field which was representative of a 1.8 GHz GSM base station emission. The study reported an increase in the incidence of tumors of the brain and heart – which confirmed similar findings by the U.S. National Toxicology Program the same year.
Dr. Belpoggi was among the scientists who defined the 2019-2024 priorities of the International Agency on Research on Cancer (IARC) which in 2010 had already classified electromagnetic fields as a possible human carcinogen. In that review, the IARC cited laboratory studies as well as human epidemiological studies evidencing increased risk for glioblastomas and Schwannomas. According to a paper published in the International Journal of Oncology, further IARC analysis has been stalled by industry-linked scientists at the World Health Organisation.
Dr Belpoggi will be one of several expert speakers at the EMF Medical Conference 2021, a virtual event January 28 – 31, 2021. The conference’s foreword declares that “the biological and health effects of electromagnetic field exposure are scientifically established and no longer deniable. Science continues to demonstrate, in over 2000 peer reviewed publications, clear adverse health effects of electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure on humans, animals, and plants.”
We invite you to watch the EMF conference’s video trailer– as well as a chilling presentation by its honoree, the late Dr Martin Blank, associate professor of physiology and cellular biophysics at Columbia University and author of the seminal book “Overpowered”. He wrote:
“The time to deal with the harmful biological and health effects is long overdue. To protect our children, ourselves and our ecosystem, we must reduce exposure by establishing more protective guidelines.”
In the video itself, Dr Blank says: ”One study shows that as cellphone usage has spread widely, the incidence of fatal brain cancer in younger people has more than tripled. We are putting cellular antennas on residential buildings and on top of hospitals where people are trying to get well.
“Wireless utility meters and cell towers are blanketing our neighborhoods with radiation. It’s particularly frightening that radiation from our telecommunication and power line technology is damaging the DNA in our cells. It is clear to many biologists that this can account for the rising cancer rates.”
To confront the apparent, cumulative hazard of electromagnetic frequencies emanating from cell towers and the many other sources, there are steps that families can take to try to mitigate the risks. Please look out for guidance in future editions of our Newsletter.
